My name is Emerson Erwin. I'm currently a senior at St. Joseph Catholic School, and I am a member of the Bruin News Now staff. I live in Madison, Miss., with my parents and two younger sisters. I'm originally from Louisiana, and I hope to go to college there.
I first started taking broadcast journalism year-round in eighth grade. I initially found taking a class with high school students intimidating -- especially because I had so little experience in journalism. I started in the background jobs, where I mainly filmed soundbites or helped film the actual newscast.
Today, I am one of the main news anchors and the News Director of the broadcast program. I've tried every job at least once. I write scripts and occasionally do news and features packages. I also have anchored sports and weather a few times each. Broadcast journalism and the St. Joe student media program have helped me improve my writing and public-speaking skills. It has also helped me learn responsibility and patience, as well as how to work under pressure with strict deadlines.
Besides journalism, I am the captain of the Spirit Steppers dance team, a member of the school's Retreat Team, Bruinthon Committee, Student Government, and senior class secretary. I am also a member of Mu Alpha Theta, Quill and Scroll, National Spanish, the National English, National Science, and National Honor Societies. I am in all honors and AP classes, and have a 4.4 GPA. I have been named an MAIS All-Star dancer in 2023, as well as UDA All-American in 2021 and 2023. I have also been named a member of the All-State Journalism team in both 2022 and 2023.
I hope to attend Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and attend graduate school. I am also considering the University of Notre Dame.
