Ever since I started in high school journalism in 2019, the leadership role I play has significantly grown. I started with soundbites and packages, as well as occasional anchoring. I became a lead anchor in 2020. In the 2021-2022 school year, I was one of two news directors leading the planning and overseeing production of each week's newscast. Since the 2022-2023 school year, I have been the sole news director, along side sports director Gia Picarella (2020-2023) and Adriana Terrazus (current). Even though it's a lot of work, I have come to really appreciate what this experience has brought me.
As news director, I make the lineup for each week's newscast and assign stories. Assigning jobs is a difficult task because it wouldn't be fair to have the same people do everything (even though they may be amazing). At the same time, having new people produce story packages may mean they won't be the best. It all comes down to having everyone in our broadcast class learn what to do, and learning what not to do
I'm also the newscast script editor. I write the script when I anchor, but I also edit it for anyone who needs help. After I edit the script, we film our newscast.
My sports director and I also make sure everyone meets deadlines, gets help if needed, and executes their assignments. This job has taught me lots of responsibility and patience, which are two things that I need. We all make mistakes, and it's how we think on our feet and fix those mistakes that matter. Being able to adapt quickly is something that is very important, especially in the ever-changing world of news.
I hope I have done everything I can to move my school's broadcast program further, and leave the newscast in strong hands. I am also grateful for the last six years and all I have learned.
